Gavin was a writer and poet who regularly gave readings of his published works. He had a wide knowledge of music, art, history, cinema and literature which informed his writing. He loved walking and swimming, good French wine, stilton and Christmas pudding.
He will be much missed by his partner Frances, his family and his large circle of friends and former students.
Sadly Gavin was diagnosed with an aggressive brain tumour in August 2022 but still managed to complete his memoir. He was treated by doctors at Charing Cross Hospital in London where on many occasions he and his close family were able to enjoy the peace and comfort of the hospital’s Maggie’s Centre - a network of nationwide centres offering free information and support to cancer patients and their families.
